How to Restore BMW ICOM Next with Red LEDs and Flashing Red/Yellow System LED
If your BMW ICOM Next shows all LEDs as solid red and the system LED is flashing red/yellow after an update, follow these steps to restore the device.
Steps to Restore BMW ICOM Next
1. Disconnect the Device:
- Unplug the ICOM Next from power or your vehicle.
2. Prepare the USB Stick:
- Navigate to the directory: `C:\ProgramData\BMW\ISPI\data\TRIC\ICOMNext\ICOM-Image-xx-yy-zz` on your computer. (Note: This directory is hidden.)
- Copy the following files from the latest folder version:
- `ICOM_Next-rootfs-xxxxxx.tar.gz`
- `ICOM_Next-app-yyyyyy.tar.gz`
- Do not use the `ICOM_Restore.bin` file.
- Ensure both files are placed in the root directory of a USB flash drive formatted with the FAT32 file system.
3. Connect the USB Stick to ICOM Next:
- Insert the USB stick into the ICOM Next device.
4. Initiate Firmware Update:
- Press and hold the button on the right side of the ICOM Next, next to the OBD-II cable connector socket.
- While holding the button, plug the ICOM Next into your vehicle's OBD II socket.
- Continue holding the button until the LED turns solid red.
- Release the button and then press it three times within 5 seconds to start the firmware update.
5. Wait for the Update to Complete:
- The update process may take several minutes. Do not disconnect the ICOM Next during this time.
- The emergency firmware update is complete when all LEDs are no longer lit.
- Remove the USB stick.
6. Reconfigure the ICOM Next:
- After the firmware update, all previous settings will be lost.
- Connect the ICOM Next to your network with a LAN cable to reconfigure it.
- If you have a `user.settings` file on the USB stick, it will be automatically installed after the firmware update.
Identifying the Correct Reset Button
- Original ICOM Next:
- The reset button is behind a small black hole on the device.
- Non-OEM ICOM Next:
- The reset button location may differ.
- The red circle in the diagram indicates the non-OEM reset button.
- The blue circle indicates the OEM reset button.
- Some original ICOM Next boards may have the reset button in the blue circle location.
By following these steps, you should be able to restore your BMW ICOM Next device and resolve the issue with the LEDs.
